Wisdom usually does not fall from high places. The mighty and the famous have taught me little. I have learned more from my dog than from all the great books I have read. The wisdom of my dog is the product of his inability to conceal his wants.

When he yearns to be loved, there is no pouting in the corner. There are no games entitled "Guess what's the matter with me?" He simply puts his head on my lap, wags  his tail and looks up at me with kind eyes, waiting to be petted. No professor or teacher ever told me I might live a more successful life if I simply asked for love when I needed it.   Gerry Spence

Animals serve as conduits for people to fulfill their primal need for connection to nature. The animals in a home may be a person's only and deepest source of unconditional love. Millions of people need this kind of love- love without judgement or stinginess in a world of emotional and spiritual isolation. Animals bridge the gap between our hearts and our minds. As became clear after Hurricane Katrina, some people will die rather than lose a relationship for which there is no human substitute.

Oh, what unhappy twist of fate

Has brought you homeless to my gate?

The gate where once another stood

To beg for shelter, warmth, and food

For from that day I ceased to be

The master of my destiny.

While he, with purr and velvet paw,

Became within my house the law.

He scratched the furniture and shed

And claimed the middle of my bed.

He ruled in arrogance and pride

And broke my heart the day he died.

So, if you really think, oh Cat,

I'd willingly relive all that

Because you come forlorn and thin

Well ... don't just stand there...come on in!

There must be a heaven

for the animal friends we love.

They are not human,

yet they bring out our own humanity~

sometimes in ways that other people cannot.

They do not worry about fame or fortune~

instead they bring our hearts nearer to the joy of simple things.

Each day they teach us little lessons

in trust and steadfast affection.

Whatever heaven may be,

there's surely a place in it

for friends as good as these.
